Hammerhead Stern End - She Floats

[IMAGE] This is the USS Hammerhead tied up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We'd just returned from a ten week NATO run playing cat and mouse games in the North Atlantic. It is tough to tell from the picture, but our paint was blown off on the top deck from taking depth charges - just practice ones, but powerful enough to knock you around. The pod by the American flag is a noisemaker that made the same noises as a Russian Victor III submarine, so when we were sneaking up on a surface task force, it would seem like Loud Ivan was coming - which is why they were successful depth charging us. On the aft surface you can see the angling dimple of the towed array fairing, the sonar that is dragged by a mile long cable aft, but the array itself is ¾ of a shiplength and when stowed it lies in this housing. The gangway and shorepower cable bridge can be seen going to the pier - and it is definitely low tide. Forward, the sail and fairwater planes can be seen, with the AN/BRA-34 radio mast up (I called it the BIGMOUTH for simplicity in my novels). This was the shore liberty that I encountered the Sea Hag (see the Author Bio).
